Evaluation - Construction

For the construction of my magazine I started with a theme, after contemplating what theme to use, I finalised on my decision on to use a theme representing the urban grungy look. I then chose a genre, Bassline/Grime as this links in with the urban theme and look. After the base of my magazine was completed, I contemplated on the magazines name, using some ideology and relating the name to the music genre I came up with Pure Grime Magazine. Following this, I would have to find a font that would represent the urban look, I used a font website and then finalised the fonts to these below.

As all these fonts resemble the genre and theme I am aiming for it was difficult to decide which one to chose. I finally chose the font ‘capture it’ (bottom right) as it had more rigid edges on the letters and looks more professional.

Initial - Research and Planning

The initial target audience for my magazine is young teenagers. However, I want my magazine to target young teenager’s right through to young adults (13-25) as this will increase chance of sales and will allow me to make the magazine not just grungy but also stylish at the same time. This will increase the quality of the magazine which will hopefully contribute to its success once published. I have chosen this as my target audience.

The audience I am targeting through Pure Grime magazine is the urban and city people of today’s Britain. Through research from websites, I have found that if I have the frequency of my magazine to weekly it would become more popular, with the young generation. The price will be £2.00 for each unit and production cost will be around 50 pence. Therefore this product has a 75% profit margin; however a percentage of this will be used for wages and photographers etc. As music plays a colossal role in a massive percentage of are young youth today, this music magazine will hopefully be successful through its new and original music base.

Print - Analysis of Key concepts

It is important that the features of the magazine design I will be creating demonstrate a relevant appropriate genre, representation and ideology. It is also important that images selected release the representation and ideology to match the genre of the magazine. Most of today’s typical successful music magazines are mainly centred on youths and ideas of rebellion. So the images and style of magazine I select need to be appropriate to this style and culture of today’s youth.
A lot of today’s best-selling music magazines portray the idea of rebellion and mischief amongst today’s “rock stars” and modern pop-culture indie/ rock and alternative musicians. So I have chosen to not duplicate this style of theme and have chosen to create my magazine of the also popular R’n’B and bassline genre. Here are sum examples of some successful grungy magazines that incorporate there magazines into this genre.

If we use this issue of SOURCE Magazine as an example, we see that the majority of the figures on the page adopt a particular “rough and ready” grungy appearance which the viewer would typically receive as an image of their personality and subsequent genre of music. In my magazine I will replicate the some of the same ideology and representations seen in this type of music genre. I will also incorporate some of the grungy effects that NME and KERRANG magazine has so that my magazine will look just right for the target audience.

Print - Initial research and analysis

For my piece of coursework I have decided after finishing the prelim tasks, I am going to for fill my potential and do print. For which includes creating a new music magazine of your choice. I will have to design the front cover, contents page and a double page spread, featuring an interview or article. It has to contain the similar quality that relates to a current professional-quality music magazine. Therefore, I will need to research different existing magazine companies from which I can annotate the design and layout and build up knowledge of a good music magazine. Photographic imaging will have to be of a high quality in order to demonstrate professional editing, which logically will have to be taken by myself so is original and not copied from any other source, so copyright is not breeched. I will have to contemplate types of font, styles, sizes and colours extremely cautiously as they will effect the final piece. I will also have to research my target audience, and make a definite decision as this is vital to a consistence successful music magazine.

My research will be based on current successful music magazines that are top sellers in the music scene such as NME, CLASH, Q, MOJO and KERRANG. I will also carry out research on new magazines such as WOOFAH as they include many aspects that grab the target audience’s attention, which I could use effectively. This should give me a clear idea of today’s style and flare of magazine publishing, mostly relating to the music industry. I have already started to consider a number of styles and names for my magazine. I have found that a music magazine name should be short yet makes a statement within itself. As I am creating a new music magazine I have considered using a new genre of music, garage/grime as there are very few successful magazines in this genre. This style of music is all so up and coming as it is the new young urban style. So I have contemplated names such as Pure Grime, Bassline and flex.
