Evaluation Question 4

How did you use new media technonogies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

We used the blog (an example of our use of new media technology - Web 2.0) In the evaluation stage of our production.

We used youtube (another example of Web 2.0) as part of our researching the genre and characteristics.
We also used sites such as myspace to research similar bands to the Social Icons - and research similar musicians' images.

Below is the workspace we used to edit our footage - we used Adobe Premier Pro CS4 editing software to edit the music video, and Adobe Photoshop CS4 to edit the images.

This is the video camera we used to record the film footage. The model is Canon MX2.

This is a microphone recorder. We used this to record the evaluation.

Evaluation Question 3

What have you learned from your audience feedback?
The feedback we got throughout the production helped shape the product itself - the main way we were helped by this is with the music video, and the narrative. The narrative to begin with was lacking in substance, and appeared to be confusing to the viewer - Chelsea said 'the narrative needs a lot more work to make more sense, and link with the song'. Upon hearing this, we did another film shoot and got a lot more footage. The narrative is now much stronger, and has a more powerful link with the song and its lyrics.
Upon the project's completion, Liam said 'it has improved dramatically', and commented on how it 'makes a lot more sense'. This is because the narrative took up a lot more time that it had.
The feedback we got therefore helped us a good deal on the path to the finished product.

Evaluation Question 2

How effective in the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

We have included these images to show the effective combination of the main and ancilliary texts is, through the common theme of the band's logo running through all the products.

Completed video project

Below is the completed video project, we have shown it to a few people and will be getting some feedback soon. Please note that the resolution on this video is a lot lower than the original due to having to compromise with file size for uploading to the blog.

Print

Today I have done some work on the print side of the project, and have redesigned the magazine advert as it was leaning too far towards a tour advert - I have also been looking at the back cover and inside pages of the digipak, and I have looked at a few new styles I will be using.

Print

As Alex is not in for the rest of the week, making it impossible to shoot any further footage I have decided to concentrate on the print side of the work. I am currently experimenting with styles and effects for the back cover of the digipak.

Narrative

We have spent today recording a few more shots for the narrative on the video, and have managed to complete a second draft - which is now awaiting feedback from the few people we have shown it to.
The narrative makes much more sense with the shots we have added, and we are quite pleased with how it is coming together.

Self Evaluation of production so far

The strengths of the video as it stands is the band footage, we had a great opportunity to get some really good footage and did this with exceptional quality. Also the editing is coming along nicely, however the cuts need to be faster and the narrative needs some work.
I think the group should change the pace of the move to each clip so it is fast moving as this would reflect the fast pace music also. I think that we should also change some of the editing so the band footage is equal to the narrative footage, as I feel that some of the band clips at the moment are too long.
The group have yet to finish the narrative and do some more editing of the footage we already have.

Narrative Editing

We have edited all of the narrative footage we have taken, but after showing it to people and getting feedback we have decided to take some more footage - Alex will be doing this tonight.
As the deadline is monday, we need to do this quickly.

Editing band footage

I am still perfecting the band footage and making another draft of the video without narrative - we have tried on multiple occasions to film but have had problems due to studio booking and convenience.

Album Cover

We have been continuing with our editing of the band footage we shot, and also photoshopping variations of the Digipak Cover - playing around with the logo. In addition to this, we have been musing with stills taken from the footage and wondering whether we will need an additional photoshoot for our mag advertisement.

Animation

Jed stayed behind after college and continued with the short animation - trying to find the best settings for it. In the next lesson, we agreed that we were now happy with the animation, and could now focus on the storyline of the video, and the digipak. This is the animation we produced.

Shooting

This involved planning the shooting in the lesson, and going to the venue (The Fleece) after college to record the band live. In addition to the planning, Jed made a short animation for at the start of the video we are pretty happy with. These pictures are of part of our planning for this shoot.

Filming the band

We were invited to a practise session of the band, and decided to take advantage and record some band footage. We used the lesson making plans for this, and setting up a premier pro workspace we would use to edit this footage. While setting up the workspace, we decided to make a short animation. Jed played around with the effects on premier pro to make this animation, which we are pretty happy with.
