4.How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
Premiere Pro Techniques
These are screenshots of us using different Abobe Premiere Pro techniques
This screenshot shows us editing the video by adding a black and white filter, the black and white filter gives the trailer more of a horror atmosphere

This one shows is cutting the video so that we put the correct scenes along side each other.
Another important technique we used in our trailer was the slow motion effect, which was great for creating tension which is vital in a film of this genre

Screenshots of Photoshop and Premiere Pro Editing
These are some photographs of the group in the editing stages of the magazine and film. A very time consuming aspect of making both the trailer and the print elements of the project. On two of these photographs we were working on the print element part of the project. As we were producing a front cover for a glossy film magazine it was essiential to edit the photograph as accurately as possible. The other photograph shows the editing stage of the film, in this photograph we were designing the titles for the trailer
Websites and formats we used to create our products
Adobe Premiere Pro- the software we used to edit our trailer
Adobe Photoshop- the software we used to edit our photography for our film poster and magazine
Blogger- an online tool were we developed our ideas and posted our work, this is bloggerWe used blogger.com to create our blog to show the production process,
and earlier in the production stage we used youtube to gain on inspiration from other real media texts(you can see examples of these at the start of the blog). These are two examples of furthur different technologies we utilized in our project they assisted us hugely for different reasons. It shows how technology has come on and its advances has improved are ability to produce better quality products.
1. In which ways does your media product use, develop, challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Conventions of a horror/thriller film.
We looked at many different examples of films and trailer in this genre, by researching into these we were able to find the conventions of films of this nature. These are some of the conventions we noticed:
- the narrative centres around a crime or crimes
- the antagonist ensares the protagonist in an increasinly complex web, until the the protagonist feels isolated and helpless
- in most horror films there is an enigma in the film
- these films are usually set in usual surroundings and happen to ordinary people but the situations they get into are extraordinary in nature
- suspense needs to be built up reaching up to a big climax

Why our film follows the conventions of the genre
These screenshots of our trailer show how it follows the coventions of the horror genre. These shots are what could be in any film of this genre. The first of these screenshots is a basic horror shot, which would often be at the beginning of the trailer which we have done, its introduces the characters and sets the scene. The second of these screenshots follows that of the first and this brings in a bit of the horror aspect in. The shot creates this as it appears as if someone is watching which brings tension to the trailer. The way in which the camera is positioned with the tree in sight and the awkard angle suggests that someone is watching. A shot similar to this could feature in any film of this nature. The third screenshot creates panic with its unnerving shakiness and pace, an emotion which horror trailers try to achieve. The fourth screenshot creates a bit of confusion, adds more depth to the trailer and would hopefully entice an audience to the cinema. Screenshot five shows that our actors have the characteristics very much expected in this genre, vulnerable and paniced. Screenshot six shows a scene which a body is dragged from the screen, scenes similar to this are quite regular in films in this genre. The last three screenshots were quite close towards the end of the trailer from screenshot seven we slowed down the movement and made the camera more shakey, which creates more fear, more of an atmosphere to end the trailer with a big impact. Screenshot eight is the set up for this, the scene which makes the audience jump in their seats, if you can achieve this, it shows that the horror aspects are a success.

3. What have you learn't from your audience feedback?
Feedback of the video
Room For Improvement- Although we did not receive any negative feedback we believed we could have improved our video through better timing of cuts, and added features such as lighting effects to add to the tense atmosphere we were trying to create.
We liked to gather feedback to help improve our trailer, this is vital to giving the audience what they want and in the end thats how you end up with successful sales.

Change and Other Locations

Here are some pictures of another one of our locations. The location here is of the semiary where a few of our scenes were shot. This surrounding was great for a film of this nature, the whole place oozed fear. It was abandoned and has been for many years and the grounds were just full of interesting and quite scary architecture and objects. Just walking around the place even in the day time was quite unnerving, it was pretty much perfect for what we set out to achieve, this part of the mise-en-scene was pretty much covered with such a great location.

More Feedback
Feedback Steve Brennan
Like Greg, Steve also brought up the point that the story isn't explain throughly enough. So after two people highlighting this we decided to make a change.

Feedback to the Video
Feedback- Greg Kerr
Greg's thoughts to our early edits to the video
Good Things
The video created tension well and had a clear sense of genre in it.
Bad Things
The video lacks a description of the actual story.
How we aim to correct this
In the scenes as the actors are walking up towards the semiary we will add a bit of dialogue to describe whats happening.

Final Magazine Design

This magazine was our final front cover for our film magazine, after going through the development processes we decided on this as our best. We specifically liked the background,we had numberous different ones before arriving at this one. We felt that that edited red building/sky background gave the front cover a sinister edge
Magazine Development
Above is the shot we used of the actors,we shot this in a darkened studio and we later added the background in the editing process on photoshop.
For our magazine we tried numberous different layouts, backgrounds, foregrounds. Here are a few examples of our magazine front covers.
These ones are some of the earliest front cover designs. The one we finally decided on was very different in many ways to these.

Change To Scene Layout
When we actually started filming the scene layout changed quite significantly from what we had proposed in the shot layout draft.
1. We decided against the whole sitting around the table scene, where the characters discuss the plot as its just too dull in a horror/thriller trailer. The start which we had planned for the trailer seemed on re-condsideration to long and drawn out, we wanted to get stuck into the thriller genre straight away and these scene were too slow, we wanted to create a more pulsating impact from the start.
So we decided upon the characters arriving on location backed with a chilling soundtrack to set the scene, we included establishing shots of the vehicle arriving and the characters moving toward the semiary.
2. We broke up this from the next scene using titles, we did this a number of times throughout the trailer as it added pace and encourgement to watch the film. This title, "You have to see this film"-quentin tarantino.
3. A short couple of seconds shot of an eye opening.
4. A number of different shots of movement in the woods using fade to black filters which give the impression of blinking and panic.
5. Another title, "One of the scariest movies of all time"- gory magazine
6. Quick panning shots of the building.
7. Title "...genuinely horrifying.."-empire magazine.
8.9.10. Shots of the preist, a bloody hand and following footsteps.
11. Shots of dialogue among the characters showing the fear as they run for shelter.
12.Title " the entire cinema was shaking in fear"- the times
13. Various shots of the location to create anxiety and dread.
14. Title "by the acclaimed screenwrite Daniel Woodcock"
15. Another scene of the preist aimed to be unnerving.
16. Shot of a character being dragged, after a christian cross is dropped, the camera isnt to reveal the killer.
17. Actor titles, " Callum Leigh", "Matthew Roche", "Jordan Molyneux".
18. Various shots of the inside of the location (slow motion) to again emphaise fear
19. Scene of a character checking the room through a hole in the wall, cut to a shot of a christian cross thrust through the otherside.
20. End Titles, "Demoniac", "Coming Soon".

Shot Layout Draft
Shot Layout
• The three friends sat round a table, dim lighting, discussing a news article showing the events that occurred at St Josephs
• As each person says one stage of the murders, a flashback is shown of the event. Eg, 1.) A young priest rejected God and looked to stop the head priest’s teachings. [Flashback] Shows a young priest ripping up his book of teachings. 2.) It was said he murdered Father Michael and looked to escape the seminary. [Flashback] Shows the lower half of a body laid horizontal with a sharp cross dripping with blood next to him. 3.) He was condemned to death within the seminary, and it was forced to close. [Flashback] Gates shutting...
• Cut to reaction shot of the three friends, using an establishing shot, within the building
• Quick shots of car stopping on the edge of the woods.
• Walking through woods, quick edits. Minimal dialogue. Atmospheric long chords.
• Reaction shot of finding the monastery and sharp cuts to action scenes.
• Very fast editing showing the changing emotions of the three friends, panic, screams. [MAIN ACTION SCENE]
• Ending with a booming noise and cut to a black screen with a title or quote slowly fading in, slower sentimental music eg, piano. Showing a fragile character crying, sat searching for help.
• Cut to one last split second scene of horror, loud booming sounds, end.
We believe that if we follow this rough shot layout we will be able to create tension well, and reveal the main storyline to the audience without giving away anything too particular.
