Poster Drafts

We have changed our poster design, as we thought it would appeal to a wider audience rather than limiting our market to just a young audience. We have made it look more sophisticated, by taking a still from the film of the younger children. This also indicates part of the story line and gives the audience an inside look at the video. It is also more abstract than the obvious picture of the lead singer, we think this is more unique and will interest the market.
Here are some of the drafts using this new approach.

Consent From Guardian

This is a photo of a hand written letter to the head teacher, wrote by the parent of Reece and Ella (the children we used in the video). It is giving permission for the children to be on site and to be filmed for the video.

Rough Cut

This clip is our video so far (rough cut). We haven't added any effects or transitions at this stage and the shots are yet to be fully edited. It gives us a general idea of how the video will look. The peer feedback we have received is based on this video.

Peer Reviews

Jacob Middleton -

"Fantastico! but some of the shots at the start of the video are a little bit boring, when he's just stood singing. You could liven up the shot with an effect or something. Other than that I love it, well done =)"

We agreed with his comments and took his advise, we changed the lighting in these shots to make them more interesting and appealing to the eye. We have included a short video to show how we did this.

Natalie King -

"My favourite shots are the faster paced ones, I really like how you have Incorporated the fairytale book into the story and the animated drawing effect looks really good. The opening sequence with the children is great, it adds more to the story. You could maybe put some of these scenes in the video towards the end to connect them to the older characters"

We also took this advice as it makes sense and when we moved some clips we found it fit very well. The children now walk away towards the end of the song. Indicating that the characters are meant to be together and there is a happy ending.

Max Mayer -

"This is really good, good work guys :) I love the violin shots they fit so well with the song. The concept fits really well with the lyrics"

Adobe Premier Pro Editing

We edited this shot as it didn't fit with the rest of the video, the colour was off and his skin looked too pink. We really liked the shot, so we decided to edit the colours with a colour tool in premier pro. We neutralised the the skin tone and brightened it up slightly. It now flows very well with the rest of the video. This screen shot shows the tool we used to edit the video clip.

Editing Lighting Effects

This is a short piece of filming whilst we are editing shots to change the lighting. We selected 'transform' then 'lighting effects' we added 2 lights, the first a pink and the second a contrasting blue. We did this to make these more static shots more visually interesting, which was suggested to us through peer feedback. We like this effect a lot and believe it to make our video more interesting and dynamic.

Research Into Fairytale books

Planning - Storyboard

We drew up this story board to help us visualise the shots when filming. This particular storyboard is the filmed sequence to the first verse. It shows specific shots of the children and their actions, we also wrote the lyrics underneath each image so we knew which action went with each line. When we finally filmed this we did change it slightly but kept the types of shots the same. We also followed the actions but re ordered them with the song. We fell this helped a lot when filming as it helped us plan and we didn't waste time when out with the camera.

Other Print advertisement Ideas continued

This second idea is different with the dark background and the striking bright rainbow effect. We feel it doesn't fit our genre very well and is too distracting and loud. We prefer a softer pallet of colours that flow well together, these are too contrasting.

Editing on Adobe Premiere Pro

We edited this shot of the flowing dress, we made the image brighter to look lively and surreal-looking. We did this by clicking on the edit controls, and selecting an option to change the brightness and contrast of the image. We feel this looks a lot better than it did originally.

This shot transforms into the animated sequence, we strategically placed this shot here, as the lyrics say, "cause I don't care if I lose my mind, I'm already cursed" as the skirt becomes the animated transition, it indicates that he is losing his mind as she becomes the fairytale in his mind.

Other Print Advertisement Ideas

We tried out some other print ideas and here are the first drafts. The first one was inspired by an old fairy tale book, this is shown by the old golden text, the swirls and the illusion of pages. We don't like that there is a sharp edge at the bottom of the image and it is too plain.

Print first drafts

This is our first draft of the poster advertisement for the digipak, we liked the contrast of the dark background with the bright flashes of colour it also makes the text stand out more. We chose this image from the shoot as we feel it fits best and we liked the expression and positioning. We edited this photo to show light coming from the top left corner, made his skin appear clearer and brightened the eye colour etc.

We would put this poster advertisement in teen girl magazines, such as "Bliss", "Mizz" or "Sugar" as this is our target audience for the song and the video. It is bold, straight to the point and lively, which is what you would expect to find in magazines such as these.

This is the first draft of the CD cover we wanted to keep it similar to the poster advertisement for continuety within the products

This is our initial idea for the inserts in the digipak, we used the lyrics from the song in the same style 'old english' text, we also added a fading border to make it atheistically pleasing.

Second Outside Location

Here we are using a high shot to look down on the violin to show it being played from this angle

This is the location for other outdoor shots in a similar location, we liked the water in the background and the reflection of the sky and generally how it looked. We liked the shapes of the trees and the colours of the background.

Filming In The Studio & Outside

Here we were filming in the studio for the singing scenes, we also took our print photos here.

We filmed more violin shots outside to link the violinist to the singer and use them both for the same locations and add some variety to the violin shots

Props

Fake flowers used in the opening sequence as the younger boy gives them to the younger girl.

The violin used for the musical intervals

The inner pages of the fairy tale book we made, we made the book look old for realism and put in stills from filming to tie the two together

The book before we wrote on the pages

The front cover of the book with font that matches that of the print

Equipment List

Video camera for filming

Light deflector for flash on still camera

Tripod, to sucure and position the video camera

Video camera in case with spare battery

Designing the fairy tale book as a prop

When designing the fairy tale book to use as a prop, we looked at styles of text for inspiration. As we used the text "Fairy Tales" on the front cover. We decided to use an old english style shown here as the second from the bottom on the list. We felt it went with our theme well and made it look more realistic. We burned and dyed the paper a light brown, as well as the edges of the pages inside to make it appear old and traditional. To continue this theme we used gold poweder to create the golden letters. We also printed stills from our filming to put into the book and wrote in it to make it appear more realistic.

More Filming

Here are some images of filming the opening scenes of the video. It was difficult to schedual filming the younger cast members as times conflicted with their school.

Younger Cast

Here are our younger cast members, we cast them based on characteristics; such as hair colour and age to match the older cast as they represent the same two characters.

Their costumes are also similar to that of the other cast members, so the audience instantly understands that it is a flash back of the same people only younger. We feel these scenes flow with the lyrics very well.
