For my main image on the magazine cover, I decided to use that of the model with an umbrella, which did have a bit of edge to it. I created the magazine cover in photoshop.
Firstly, I had to edit the photograph so it wasn't as dark. I did this by using the auto-format, auto-colour and auto-contrast buttons on the image. This made the image brighter, and easier to see. Following this, I edited out any of the darker spots on the white background and models face using the 'spot tool'. This made the image much neater and looked more professional. I then got rid of the models red eye, by using the red eye tool, which also made the image look more professional. I then resized the image so the model was larger, and fit the page better. To do this, I held down the shift button when resizing, so the photograph wouldn't go out of proportion.
Once the image was edited to how I liked it, I started to fit the tag line and headlines around it. As the model had mainly worn black and red, I thought that those colours would be a good scheme to focus on. The tagline, 'Boulder', was added to the top of the page, and I slightly tilted it anti-clockwise. Underneath I wrote in smaller writing 'the rock that rolls', and kept this straight. After positioning them as I wanted, I grouped them together, so they would move together if I needed them to.
I then began positioning the headlines. For the main headline that went with the picture, I used the text 'this time she's solo' and then in much larger writing 'PLUTO'. Again I positioned and grouped the text, then moved it down so that the text was covering the lower half of the models body, and made sure her hands and face weren't covered. This made it obvious that this was the headline that matched the photograph, and from that I could position other headlines around it.
For the other headlines, I fit them around the models body, so that the photograph could still be clearly seen. I followed the colour scheme of red and black, and made the headlines with large text. If they had an explanation underneath them, I made the explanation slightly smaller, so that the headline was the obvious grab point.
For one of the headlines, I added a black circle, and positioned it in the top right corner, then added the headline inside the circle. This made the headline obvious again, but gave something different to just plain text.
Finally, I added the bar code, price and date of the magazine to the bottom right hand corner, using smaller text and barcode. This followed what magazines usually use for their price, with an easily read text but a small size.
