After doing some preliminary research i did a small script for different parts of the documentary, the media expert and the case of the mother whos lost her son - Mrs Leyland:
Media expert: “No, I do not believe that video game, movies or any other genre of violent media causes violence and aggression in a common setting. It has to be a certain type of person that would be so cold-hearted and, stubborn and monumentally blind and dim witted to take these games on face value and think of them as realistic. None, I repeat, none of the games out are real! They don’t look real, they don’t sound real and quite literally they never will do. Media has the unreal ability to shape how we THINK and FEEL. There’s little evidence to say that it shapes what we do and I refuse to believe it does”.
Presenter: “Well it’s quite easy to see what Dr Heaton thinks on the subject of violent media. And of course we cannot say if he is right or wrong, but he’s an example that will show you another side of the story.
Violent Child: “I see these games as idols, as inspiration! I dream of running around shooting everyone, and one day, with this gun (wave’s gun) I will!
Presenter: “(looks out of shot at were the boy had been) you make up your own mind as to whether games are violent or not, but this is what I’m here to try and do, get to the bottom of if media, and more specifically violent video games, causes violence in day-to-day life. Lets 1st begin with some simple game facts. Take a look (points at camera).
Presenter: Whilst filming this documentary we were approached by a young mother. For protection purposes we have named her Mrs Leyland. She had a rather compelling story that was a resort of video game violence and agreed to talk about it, but only if we did not show her face.
‘Mrs Leyland’: It happened about 3 years ago. My son was playing with a group of friends and was invited around to their house to play on his game console. I knew the friends and so allowed him to go, but only if he was back by 7 for tea. There was a knock at the door round 7ish. Thinking it was my son I went to let him in, but found it was a police officer. He asked my name and then mentioned my son. I asked what has happened and he asked could he come in. As he sat down in the chair he came out with it and told me my son had been killed. I asked how but he wasn’t sure, all he knew was that he was found at his friends’ house covered in blood. The house was empty apart from his body. I never found out what happened. I didn’t bother with an investigation just on the grounds it seemed pointless. My son was dead. He was only 8
Presenter: “After that she couldn’t continue. We did our own investigation into this incident and found that he had been killed by accident after him and his friends found an air rifle belonging to his friend’s father. They shot at each other with the safety on, pretending that they were characters from the game they were playing. Again for legal reasons we cannot reveal it. Sadly one of the groups had hit the safety off and fired at Mrs Leyland’s son. It hit his square in the head, killing him on impact. This is just one of many normal day accidents and deaths that have happened because of game violence.
