For my piece of coursework I have decided to choose the medium of print, for which I will have to design the front cover, contents page and a double page spread, featuring an interview or article, for a typical professional-quality music magazine. I will need to research a number of existing magazine companies from which I can analyse particular features and layouts that are typically found for popular culture magazines based on music. Any photographic imaging will have to be of a high quality in order to demonstrate professional standard and will naturally have to be taken by myself, not copied from any other source. I will have to consider font types, styles, sizes and colours carefully in reference to my research to maintain a consistent and appropriate house style. Subseqently, I will also have to have a clear idea of my target audience, first, to design the magazines house style adequately.
My research will be based on current top-end music magazines such as NME, Kerrang, Q, MOJO etc. This should help in giving me a clear idea of today's standards and style of magazine publishing, particularly concerning the music industry. At the moment, I have started to consider a number of names for my magazine. In my opinion, the name should be short and relevant to the magazine's theme. Since this is a music publication, names such as Feedback, Fuzz, Sound, Session, Drive, Frequency, Bass etc would work well given that they are ambiguous, and yet relate to music terminology and culture. For my final design, I have chosen to name my magazine "Fuzz". This should work well as a bold, vivid front-page title.
